Goldendoodle Info

What Is A Goldendoodle

Goldendoodle’s are designer dogs, a hybrid dog breed resulting from  breeding a Poodle with a Golden Retriever or other variations via dog  breeds like the Australian Shepard, Cocker Spaniel, etc. The  Goldendoodle breed is not a breed but a crossbreed.

Types of Goldendoodle

You may have noticed that there are many variations to a  Goldendoodle. There are different percentages and different dog breeds  involved. We will break this down for you below to help you in choosing  your Goldendoodle and to help to know what to look for and ask of a  Goldendoodle Breeder. First we will break down just the differences in breeds involved which can result in many types of Goldendoodle in itself.

  • English Goldendoodles
    • English Golden Retriever and Poodle.
  • Goldendoodle
    • Of all the types of Goldendoodle this is the most known and is a mix of Golden Retriever and Poodle
  •  North American Retrievers or Double Doodles
    • This is one of the unique types of Goldendoodle which is a mix of  Golden Retriever and Poodle and then Labradoodle which is Labrador  Retriever and Poodle. This is a two generation blend.
  • Petite Goldendoodles
    • Golden Retriever and Cavalier for the mother dog and then miniature Poodle for Sire. This is another two generation blend.
  • Teddy Bear Goldendoodles
    • English Golden Retriever which give the wider Teddy Bear face and Poodle.

So you can see here there are quite a few options that can result in many different looks to the Doodle.

Goldendoodle Generation Number

F1 Goldendoodles

The first generation Goldendoodles  are identified  with the letter and number F1. These are the product of a pure Retriever  which is bred with a pure Poodle. The result of this is 50% poodle and  50% Golden Retriever. F1 Doodles are the  traditional Doodle that have many of the traits people think of when  then think Goldendoodle. They are intelligence, have a loving demeanor  and are also hypoallergenic. Many still shed a little though so best for  a home with only light allergies. You also will notice the coats on  this generation of Doodles. They are shaggy and can be curly.

F1B Goldendoodles

You get an F1B generation Doodle when you cross-breed a F1 Doodle  with a Poodle. An F1B Goldendoodle  will be 25% Retriever  and 75% Poodle. This generation is popular due to the non shedding trait  that occurs 99% of the time. This generation is the most hypoallergenic  of the different generations. So if you have severe allergies this  would be the best fit for your home. You still get the same strength and  good health and the favorable personality traits with the F1B Doodle.  The coat type again will vary here and can be long and wavy or shorty  and curly. You will also see more color variation in the F1B  generations.

F2 Goldendoodles

This is the second generation. This means the parents are both F1  Doodles. You get equal amounts of Poodle and Doodle. The second  generation Doodles also have pretty similar qualities to the F1 Doodles.  You will most likely get light shedding with the F2 generation Doodle.  So they are best for homes with only light allergies.

F2B Doodles – Multigenerational Doodles

The F2B means there is a mix of generations. It would be a F1 Doodle  and an F1B Doodle. While less common they are still a great generation.  You see the non shedding quality come back in this generation so good  for homes with moderate allergies. You still get the good traits of  personality and good health also.

Doodle Traits

Grooming will be a big requirement with Goldendoodles. Some more than  others depending on the coat type. You should groom them about every 4  to 6 weeks and they should be brushed regularly. The hair will be wavy to curly not so much straight but we do see it.  You will have very little shedding if any at all. Most are very allergy  friendly with the F1B being the most allergy friendly dog.
Goldendoodles with their Golden Retriever and Poodle parents will be  very sweet and affectionate dogs. They are highly intelligent and love  to play but are gentle still. They make great family dogs.
They make great therapy dogs but can also be used as service or guide  dogs, however activity is a restraining factor in this for a happy  healthy dog. They are great with challenge and make good agility dogs.  They need exercise and do best in homes with active family members where  they can get plenty of outdoor-activity. They need daily exercise. A  lack of exercise can result in some unwanted behavior like excessive  digging, chewing, barking or other activities. Due to the nature of the parents you will want to watch the chewing  tendencies and make sure you train from the beginning not to chew,  especially on people. Teaching them its ok on their toys is a great  route. Due to their nature they do not make good apartment dogs. They need  outdoor activity and room to play. This would be the only push back of  having them as therapy or guide dogs as they require a lot of activity  by nature.
